NC Social Studies Standards & Religious Diversity: August Food for Thought Resources

Opening Prayer by Nina Wynn

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy upon us and grant us your Peace.

We gather this day with hearts that are full.

Full of gratitude, hearts that are eager, receptive, and even hungry to know more about one another and our community.

But we confess that our hearts are also full… even weighed down, by anger, anxiety, fear, and doubt.

So we lift our prayers as we confess that we need you to lift our hearts.

Let us pray for our brother and sisters of Western Carolina affected by flooding…

Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in Haiti…

Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan…

Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in our own homes, our community, our state, our nation, and worldwide, who are struggling with the devastation of the COVID Pandemic.

Let us pray for the brokenness we hold in our hearts…

As we pray for the brokenness of our world… we also pray, that we can become the agents of healing so desperately needed. Guide our thoughts, our words, and our actions so that we may be agents of hope. Give us the courage to care for others and to love others, so that Your will may be made know in this time and place.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy upon us and grant us your Peace.

Closing Prayer by Beth Wells

Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.

(Bahá’u’lláh,Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh Revealed after the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, pp. 161–162)

O Thou kind Lord! These lovely childrenare the handiwork of the fingers of Thy might and the wondrous signs of Thy greatness. O God! Protect these children, graciously assist them to be educated and enable them to render service to the world of humanity. O God! These childrenare pearls, cause them to be nurtured within the shell of Thy loving-kindness.

Thou art the Bountiful, the All-Loving.

—‘Abdu’l‑Bahá [16]
