What is Friday Friends? "Trust is something we earn one person at a time." -- Joe Martin How do we bridge the gap between races and cultures? At times, Charlotte seems to have an especially wide gap. Too often we view people from a race, culture or faith that is different from our own as "people we don't trust" or "people we have no way to get to know." Mecklenburg Ministries has stepped forward to bridge the gap and build greater interracial and interfaith trust across our city with its Crossroads Project, Friday Friends. Since 2007, more than 1,000 people in the Charlotte community have paired as lunch partners across racial/ethnic and faith differences: African American, Caucasian, Latino, Native American, Asian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Baha’i, Unitarian and Christian. Friday Friends at a Glance The commitment: Have lunch (or coffee) with someone of another race, religion or culture on the last Friday of each month for four months to build a relationship. (If Friday does not work for your schedule, any day of the week will do!). We provide questions to help you take the conversation deeper and empower you and your friend to build greater interracial/interfaith trust. The goal: Learn to connect beyond the color of your skin and religious or cultural beliefs and get to know each other as people, not as "categories."
