Souls of Our Students award winning documentary features 9 local high school students sharing heartfelt reflections on the realities of life in Charlotte, and how it feels to be "different" in a community that is becoming increasingly diverse. It is being incorporated into Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools 9th grade curriculum to address issues that continually affect every high school student in our city. It is also part of the CMS Teacher Training Academy.
SOULS OF OUR STUDENTS
Dr. Peter Gorman
Beyond the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system, Souls of Our Students will be offered to companies, congregations, and independent schools in Mecklenburg County and beyond as a part of their diversity training. The Levine Museum of the New South is incorporating this documentary into its new exhibit, "Changing Places."
Three different facilitators' guides are available with the Souls of Our Students DVD: a congregational guide, and independent school curriculum (sponsored by Providence Day School), and a business guide. Curricula include questions for discussion, interactive exercises and additional resources.
Rabbi Judy Schindler, the project coordinator says, "This DVD is transformational because it tells the real stories in the real voices of our students. Their words will stay with you and inspire you to treat people with dignity, choose words carefully and create community intentionally across differences. This film will change attitudes and actions as it educates about issues of diversity."
This effort is a partnership involving nine clergy from diverse backgrounds and faiths who participated in Mecklenburg Ministries Souls of White Folks program and leaders from non-profit organizations. Souls of Our Students is a collaborative project of Mecklenburg Ministries, Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice, Temple Beth El, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
The Souls of Our Students project was made possible through the generous support of Foundation for the Carolinas and was "seeded" by the funders of the original Souls of White Folks, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundations.
Mecklenburg Ministries appreciates the incredible work of Professional Communications who produced the documentary film, which won a national 2008 Telly Award that honors the most outstanding video projects created by film and TV professionals in the past year.
