Dear Maria,

I never thought that I'd be writing a message like this one. That's because we all believe that cancer is something that our friends or neighbors or colleagues must deal with and that we try to provide support as best we can. It's always, we tell ourselves, someone else. That is until you get the call from the doctor and your life changes forever.

My wife Nancy was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and she will have her second surgery on
Monday. It's been a tough time for us but Nancy is strong and wonderful and very special. She told me last night that she is amazed how many women have told her that they will now be getting their annual mammogram. Perhaps her openness and sharing will increase the awareness of breast cancer screening.

That's why I hope that you will encourage the Mecklenburg Ministries clergy to support National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many ways - a brief mention in their sermon, a reminder in the order of service, a link on their website, a note in their newsletter, providing printed material in a location and many more. Below are some references that they might use to prepare such a message.

This could have a terrific impact on the women of faith in our community and, as I have learned, on their families.
