| What's In The Ground Concerning Race and Ethinicity in Charlotte-Mecklenburg |

The Community Relations Committee (CRC), the Community Building Initiative and Mecklenburg Ministries are proposing a series of community dialogues around how and why the process to select a new sheriff for Mecklenburg County exposed levels of mistrust and misunderstanding. The first dialogue, "What's in the Ground Concerning Race and Ethnicity in Charlotte-Mecklenburg?" will be April 1, 7pm at First Presbyterian Church. What's in the Ground Concerning Race and Ethnicity in Charlotte-Mecklenburg? In our January "Open Letter to the Community," we urged citizens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg to engage their family, friends, neighbors, congregations and associates - both within their comfort zone and across difference - in dialogue around how and why the process to select a new sheriff for Mecklenburg County exposed levels of mistrust and misunderstanding. We asked, '"What's in the ground in our community?' that was once again stirred to the surface?" We also asked if this particular issue, which expanded so quickly into divisiveness within and between groups, might be a window into a larger issue about what influences and impacts how we think about and how we respond to one another. We would caution against believing that all is resolved because all appears quiet and therefore propose a series of community dialogues to explore "What's in the Ground?" in Charlotte-Mecklenburg that needs examination and reflection. The intent is for these dialogues to be inclusive of various perspectives and different points of view and to model behaviors that strengthen relationships in our community. We want to hear from the faith community, government officials, business and non-profit leaders, educators, the media and individual residents. We propose that the faith community through Mecklenburg Ministries take the lead to organize the initial community dialogue around "What's in the Ground Concerning Race and Ethnicity in Charlotte-Mecklenburg?"
