Mecklenburg Ministries’ “Souls of White Folks” project has explored issues of privilege power and race from the perspective of “what it means to be white,” seeking to use this knowledge to bridge gaps of trust and understanding between individuals and congregations in our community. Participants have read both historical and contemporary texts, shared personal stories and experiences, and met with an advisory group of black clergy.
Are you interested in empowering your congregation to better build bridges of trust and understanding across race, and addressing questions such as:
- How do issues of inter-racial trust affect your congregation's outreach in the community?
- When did you first realize you were “ white”?
- How does understanding of what it means to be white affect a congregation's spiritual condition?
Sessions for clergy/leaders in predominately white congregations will begin on Thursday, April 15 and run for eight consecutive weeks, ending on Thursday, June 3. These will be held from 10 am to 12 noon in the Cotswold area of Charlotte. Leaders of predominately black congregations are invited to serve on a panel of clergy advisors which will meet on one of the Thursdays in May. A session for lay-leaders is being planned for the summer.
