Beyond Bullying is an anti-bullying curriculum created by Mecklenburg Ministries’ Youth Council, a high school interfaith leadership team composed of students who have participated in Mecklenburg Ministries’ “In Our Own Backyard” Interfaith Youth Service Camp. The Youth Council began tackling bullying in schools in 2009 after the production of Mecklenburg Ministries’ Souls of Our Students documentary which highlighted discrimination and harassment in schools. For several years, the Youth Council hosted an anti-bullying summit, known as WORD. In 2012, students decided to move their efforts into the classroom by creating an anti-bullying curriculum based upon what they had learned through WORD events and in the form of a school spirit week. The result is a curriculum that focuses on bullying through the lens of politics, race, religion, lifestyle choices, socioeconimic status, sexual orientation, and digital media.

Through Beyond Bullying, students engage in conversations and discovery learning about bullying and responses to bullying. For one week, each day of the week focuses on a different area of bullying. Students view podcasts from local experts, including Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, who speak about bullying from their experience and offer their thoughts on solutions and responses to bullying. At the end of the week, students participate in a school-wide assembly which includes an anti-bullying pledge signing and a panel of clergy and professionals who dialogue with students in an effort to deepen the conversation about bullying and rally students towards anti-bullying action.
